The Daily Grind Show Show

George Fero and I rocked the Daily Grind last night! We were both happy with our playing, but I wish we'd been able to get more people to come. I tried to promote the hell out of the show, but I'm not especially good at that. I hope we attracted enough people to be able to play there again. Well, thanks to everyone who did come!

Act I.
.. science
.. troglodyte
.. javelin head > deposit 1 tangelo
.. Robots: the card game [request] > retro helplessness
.. love song 5
.. stripes
.. Pablo
.. you've got your own life
.. I am systems
.. level 1
.. call it Home
.. yellow things

Act II.

George Fero, equipped with his stratocaster and some effects, played an excellent show. It was surreal and mobilizing and beautiful, and it was an honor to be present.

Act III.
.. hello, will you be my Sheep?
.. let me in your hole [request]
.. the slippery toad [request]
.. 2G's
.. 25% more monster
.. this ladybug [request]
.. Maroon Dots
.. vegetables you've never heard of
.. e blue apparatus [request]
.. 5 songs of fish

[The accuracy of my list for Act III is not to be trusted. I hardly went by my set list, and took lots of requests.]

Thanks again to all the wonderful people who came to our show! I hope you had an enjoyable evening with George and I; we surely had an enjoyable evening with you.

Grind OM 21

.. raisins [request] > you and mandolins
.. Pablo

I played again with Jim, and I think it went well. 'Twas a good open mic, chock full of interesting stuffs. Jason Martin and I had a conversation about alter egos and true selves and poopy clouds.

I was originally planning to go to an open mic at R.P.I. tonight (Friday), but I have changed my mind. At Positively 4th Street (a bar in downtown Troy), a gentleman named Jason Webley will be performing at 9:00. He's an accordian-player from Seattle; he's really good, and it's not every day he comes to Troy.

The show seems to be 18+. If anybody who fits that description wants to come with me tonight, send me a message or zap me a phone call.

the dating police

There was an incorrect date. I have decimated it and put in its place a correct one.

I play Slow Jed's Mudhouse on Saturday, Febrary 18th, 8 - 10 PM, not the 13th, as previously listed. The 13th is a Monday, and who the heck wants to go to a mandolin show on a Monday?

Not me!

Love,
Andrew the Nim

Mudhouse OM 2

Hello friends,

Nick and I traveled to the Averill Park for the open mic of Slow Jed's Mudhouse. He was penultimate, and I was last. He played a song he had never played before, which was good. My teeny set went like this:

.. eat lots of apples [request]
.. 5 songs of fish [request]

A technical detail for those interested in knowing: 'eat lots of apples' is not the same song as 'deposit 1 tangelo'. The former goes like this:

the longest way to get home
in the rain watch your own
take a lombat to dinner and you won't be sorry
regular meetings at the YMCA
you know me to be soft-spoken

eat lots of apples
eat lots of apples
and so on

and the latter goes like this:

deposit 1 tangelo
deposit 2 tangeloeezes
deposit 3 tangeloza
o
4 is the number that we stop before
4 is the number that we stop before
4 is the number that we stop b4 is the number
and so on

Sometimes, I combine the two songs into one (and there is a recording of me doing so somewhere on my songs & media page), but I also play the songs individually or with other songs. I am delighted to play the medley as a request, but I need to know that you'd like to hear both songs together.

And a disclaimer: My only CD currently available, Nodal Nim at Hurley's does not contain the song '5 songs of fish'. I had not yet written '5 songs of fish' when I made that CD. There are lots of songs that I had written, though, many of which are on there. I ought to make a new CD. I've got enough unreleased songs for one. So I will ponder this.

You can listen to '5 songs of fish' by downloading episode 001 of Nodal Nim's Rocket Ship. I don't have a separate version of it yet, but it's definitely on there.

I am considering moving all my Rocket Ship episodes to a new internet location, but I don't know where or when. Apologies for further delays.

In the meantime, you can come to my shows!

Much Love,
Andrew the Nim

Illium OM 10

Nick and I played some tunes at the Illium this evening. My set went like this:

.. javelin head > fly this kite
.. docky docky [request]
.. 25% more monster

There is the possibility that I will begin hosting an open mic next month. I'm thinking about it. It will be in Troy on Tuesday evenings. Opinions?

delicious dishes of justice

Amy and Beth fed the Nick and Ian and I a strange 6-course meal of strangeness last night. It was bizarre and wonderful. It sort of counts as music news, because I played part of an Opeth song on the mandolin as part of a music video re-enactment for the amusement of Nick, who was taken by surprise. And also tied up with duct tape and burned alive. Ian was served a banana and marshmallow phallus. Collectively, we ate unidentifyable things as odes in mega-cold. I dressed in drag. Fun and confusion were had and consumed in abundance.

Mudhouse Nim Show!

On Friday, I played a couple sets at the way-neat Slow Jed's Mudhouse in Averill Park! Some old and new friends came by, and I met a few new people. I had a good time, and I hope the audience did, too.

Here's how it went:

set 1
.. love song 5
.. raisins [temporarily redubbed 'craisins'] > will we go out together?
.. bodymind
.. 25% more monster
.. stripes
.. this ladybug
.. eat lots of apples > deposit 1 tangelo
.. e blue apparatus
.. no more crisis in Rome
.. you've got your own life
.. hello, will you be my Sheep?
.. 2G's
.. 5 songs of fish [request]
.. in my pocket > you and mandolins

set 2
.. Robots: the card game
.. troglodyte
.. Nimland > call it Home
.. Pablo
.. the slippery toad
.. fly this kite
.. I am systems
.. Deenmark
.. science
.. wow
.. candle bird
.. Collarbone Pharoah
.. Maroon Dots
.. love song 1
.. vegetables you've never heard of

And I scheduled a Slow Jed's show for next month!

Saturday Feb.13
8 - 10 PM

Grind OM 20

It was an extremely busy night at the Grind. I eventually got to play, so I did 5 songs of fish and raisins. I'm hoping for a big turn-out next weekend when I play there with George. Exciting!

Tomorrow (Friday) I'm playing my first show at Slow Jed's Mudhouse in Averill Park. I'm excited about this as well. Dave and Casey told me the regulars were still singing 'fishy fishy fishy fishy fishy fishy fish' when they were there last night at open mic! Knowing the way things are promoted and supported over there in Averill Park, I suspect there might be an excellent turn-out. I'm expecting about six people I know to come, and there's always the possibility of others. It might be tight.

Neat!

Flavour OM 7

I played some songs at Flavour Cafe open mic last night. I don't know what they were, except that Nick Borden played with me e blue apparatus and vegetables you've never heard of!

Illium OM 9

I stopped by the Illium last night to play some tunes. No PA, so I just stood there and did. Amy and Beth showed up = fun. Also, I jammed with a guy I had just met (I think named Justin), which was neat. Here's how that went:

.. I am systems
.. no more crisis in Rome > troglodyte
.. 25% more monster
.. love song 5
.. e blue apparatus [request]

I scheduled some shows last night as well: Feb. 25 (5 - 8 PM) and Feb. 26 (11 AM - 2 PM) at the Illium (5 Broadway, Troy).

Episode 4 of NNRS is finished BUT I have not been able to upload it yet. It will happen when it happens, and I have no idea when it will happen.

Very soon, I will be opening up the Rocket Ship Reader to public perusal. Very soon...

And if anybody would like to join me, I'm planning to go to the Flavour Cafe open mic this evening. I'm hoping to catch some R.P.I. students that I met last semester. It starts at 8:00. Might be a good time.

Grind OM 19: Becky, Jim, & Nim

It was a delightful evening! I played some songs with my buddy Becky, I on guitar and she on the singing of songs. We threw together three covers today of three very good songs.

.. Monument by Mirah
.. I'm Waiting for the Day by the Beach Boys
.. Don't Think Twice, It's Alright by Bob Dylan

I also played again tonight with Jim. We performed two poems of his, and we enjoyed it. I think we have something good going, and I'd be interested in getting somebody else in on it. I have a particular tabla player in mind.

And I played e blue apparatus at the end of the night.

What fun!

Mudhouse OM 1

I played my first open mic at Slow Jed's Mudhouse this evening, with Nick Borden following me on the set. It was a nice group of people to play to, and we both had fun. I would certainly do it again sometime.

My songs:

.. science
.. 5 songs of fish
.. call it Home

Nim vids.

Scott Marshall has been quite the gentleman and created three small videos of Nim songs that he captured at my last Professor Java's gig! Check out the NEWFUNSTUFF! on the main page of Nimland:

Nimland.net: the home of Nodal Nim

episodes in the worksies

In case any readers are wondering about the Rocket Ship podcast, there are indeed more episodes to come. I have two in the works right now, and in about 40 minutes, hopefully, recording will continue for the epic journey to Deenmark. I cannot give an estimate as to when they will be finished and uploaded, but I must assure you that they will be. Some characters you may expect to meet when the time comes:

The Soma Sisters

Teo 3

Cornelius Sebastian Cliffhangar

a Large Yellow Monster

a Mysterious Gentleman, Dark and Handsome

Falon, a Falon

Count Snoodbart Shivley the Third

Teo 1

...and many more!

Coffee Planet Show Oh One

I played my first solo show at Coffee Planet in Ballston Spa this afternoon, and it was fun and neat. Some friends came by and some strangers seemed to enjoy it. I think I played decently, especially in the second half. 'Twas a good time.

.. in my pocket

neat place: Slow Jed's

I went tonight to an Almost Awake show at a great new coffeehouse venue called Slow Jed's Mudhouse! It's way out in Averill Park, but it's real spiffy. I'm planning to check out their open mic this Wednesday night (8 to 11), so if you'd like to hitch a ride and check it out with me, let me know, and we can do that!

I also scheduled to play a show there for Friday, January 20, 8 PM to 10 PM. You can come to it!

Grind OM 18 / Jim & Nim

I played another set at the Daily Grind. The highlight for me was performing with a fellow I know named Jim, a poet. It all started when he said something to me like, "Hey, Andrew, after this next guy, I'm going up to read some poetry; would you like to come and play something with me?" I said yes. It was fun. We will probably do it again sometime. Jim & Nim.

my solo set:

.. call it Home
.. shirt thane > member of the Real*
.. I am systems > you and mandolins
.. science [request]

*I don't often play member of the Real. It has a chorus, but no specific verse. This is intentional. It means I have to create something basically from scratch for each verse. It's a very loose structure around some improv. Sometimes it goes well, and sometimes it doesn't. I don't know of anybody other than me who enjoys hearing it, but I want to continue developing the completely-on-the-spot-from-scratch improv thing, so it makes sense to sometimes play it**.

Coffee Planet OM 8

I played twice, the second time to fill time when we were out of musicians. Anyway, 'twas fun. The highlight was definitely playing 5 songs of fish with Dave on djembe for the very first time ever.

first
.. science
.. fly this kite
.. e blue apparatus
.. raisins > will we go out together?
.. love song 5

second
.. you've got your own life [request]
.. lapse into memory [request]
.. this ladybug [request]
.. 5 songs of fish [with Dave on djembe!]

Much love to all,
Nimberly
